CARECheck helps you assess your liver health and provides simple lifestyle recommendations on diet, exercise and lifestyle, to help you improve liver health.
“Liver disease is common but many people are unaware they’re at risk. This online assessment tool will highlight areas of potential risk and help you talk to your doctor about your liver health.”
Jacqui Richmond, Hepatology Nurse, Melbourne Health
Why you should take a test?
The liver is the second largest internal organ of the human body. It is responsible for performing many functions that are critical to your wellbeing and keeping your body working at its best. The liver:
- Clears the blood of waste products, hormones, drugs and other toxins
- Breaks down hormones and old blood cells
- Makes, stores and releases sugars and fats
- Produces essential proteins, including blood clotting factors and enzymes
- Aids digestion by releasing bile salts to break down food
- Stores and supplies vitamins, minerals and iron to parts of the body where they are needed
Without proper care, the liver can become damaged or diseased. These diseases may result from alcohol, hepatitis viruses, poor diet and toxins (from substances such as paracetamol, tobacco and marijuana), as well as some genetic defects and autoimmune disorders.
In Australia, liver disease affects more than six million people – that’s nearly 25% of our population. The most common liver diseases include fatty liver, viral hepatitis and liver cancer.
Preventing liver disease is important because there are very few symptoms in the early stages.
