Changes to hepatitis B prescribing will improve access to care 

As of 1 September 2026, all medical and nurse practitioners can now prescribe PBS-subsidised hepatitis B treatments for eligible patients. LiverWELL welcomes this change, which makes it easier for Australians living with chronic hepatitis B to access treatment and ongoing care through their regular healthcare provider. 

People living with chronic hepatitis B require ongoing monitoring and, for some, long-term treatment. By expanding the number of clinicians who can prescribe these medicines, care can be delivered through routine primary care closer to home, by trusted local GPs and nurse practitioners. 

Increasing access to diagnosis, monitoring and treatment will be essential to achieving the goal of eliminating hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.
