International NASH Day

June 9, 2023

International NASH Day is a public education campaign launched in June 2018 by the Global Liver Institute to raise visibility and urgency around fatty liver disease, an invisible epidemic, and its more advanced form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which affects more than 115 million people around the world.

What is Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)?
Steatohepatitis (NASH) is part of a progressive continuum in a group of conditions called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

It is a type of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease where a build-up of fat in the liver causes the liver to become inflamed and damaged.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) occurs when the liver becomes inflamed due to fat accumulation in the liver. It is associated with obesity, diabetes and all the elements of metabolic syndrome.

If the liver becomes scarred it may lead to cirrhosis. However, the disease doesn’t always get worse.

International NASH Day supports physicians, advocates, and other experts to collaborate and share the latest insights on how to prevent, diagnose, and manage fatty liver disease. An informed worldwide community is essential to reduce the global prevalence of fatty liver disease, which can advance dangerously if left undetected and unacknowledged.
