In August and early September, LiverWELL Health Promotion Officers Alain and Maddie delivered 12 hepatitis B workshops at Box Hill Institute’s Elgar Campus for students in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). More than 265 students participated in sessions that combined health education with language support, creating a safe and inclusive environment where participants could learn, ask questions, and build confidence in navigating the healthcare system.
The workshops broke down barriers to health literacy through storytelling and interactive activities. Topics included hepatitis B transmission, testing, vaccination, care and management, and how to talk with a doctor about your liver health. These sessions not only increased awareness but also addressed stigma and helped build trust in Australia’s healthcare system. Designed to align with the AMEP language curriculum, the sessions integrated relevant vocabulary, listening and speaking activities, and medical terminology, which are essential skills for effective for real-life medical appointments.
Teachers praised the workshops for their simplicity, engagement, and accessibility:
“Very good images and slides. Interactive with students. Quiz interaction was excellent! Easy workbook with good images. Fantastic for level 1 students.”
“Great pictures and simple, plain English to suit elementary ESL students.”
“Good delivery and the activities were well prepared and engaging.”
In 2025, LiverWELL reached over 1,000 AMEP students, with 90% reporting increased knowledge and 91% noting positive changes in attitude or behaviour related to their health.
