Stories on Canvas: Voices Beyond Borders

July 17, 2025

June 30 2025 was a night full of opportunity at the Flemington Hub — a chance to discover resources, make new connections, and express personal journeys through art. LiverWELL partnered with AusWISE to host the health seminar Stories on Canvas: Voices Beyond Borders, offering international students an engaging space to learn about hepatitis B, visas, and migration.

The aim of the event was to spark conversation and build awareness around key issues including hepatitis B, visa and migration challenges, and navigating the Australian healthcare system as an international student.

Participants were encouraged to reflect on their experiences — whether related to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or broader health concerns — and to share their stories in a safe, welcoming environment. The event also aimed to deepen understanding of stigma and discrimination, with the hope that attendees would be empowered to challenge these issues through storytelling and creative expression. On a wider level, the program promoted empathy and a more open, positive approach to talking about health conditions like hepatitis B.

Even for those not directly impacted by hepatitis B, eliminating stigma requires a collective, community-led effort.

The event focused on international students living in Melbourne and greater Victoria, particularly those from communities with higher prevalence of hepatitis B — including East and Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific Islands. These students often face unique hurdles in understanding Australia’s healthcare system, accessing accurate health information, and navigating cultural and linguistic differences. These barriers can leave them more vulnerable to preventable health issues — especially with sensitive, often-stigmatised topics such as viral hepatitis.

LiverWELL is grateful for the collaboration with AusWISE, whose guidance, expertise, and commitment to supporting international students helped shape a meaningful and impactful event.

This event was made possible thanks to our generous supporters, including Lim’s Pharmacy and Richard Lim, who kindly donated large hampers filled with essential items. We also acknowledge the in-kind support from GENWEST and the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health’s Multicultural Health and Support Service, who provided resources, materials, and merchandise.
