Studying English while learning about viral hepatitis  Hepatitis B Workshop at Box Hill Institute (CBD Campus)

December 17, 2025

Box Hill Institute’s CBD campus recently hosted an innovative AMEP workshop in collaboration with LiverWELL, featuring the Living Well with Hepatitis B Activity Pack. This interactive session blended English language learning with essential health education, creating a supportive environment for students to improve communication skills while gaining practical knowledge about hepatitis B. Participants explored key topics such as testing, vaccination, and treatment, while also addressing stigma
and dispelling common myths.

Teachers and students praised the workshop for its engaging approach and relevance, noting how it empowered learners to feel more confident about their health and well-being. One teacher shared: “It was interactive. The use of visuals and storytelling made the topic more relatable, which encouraged student participation. It was a very informative session, and students were engaged throughout.” By integrating health literacy into language education, this initiative not only strengthens English proficiency but also promotes informed decision-making and community health.

Organisations often encounter a range of challenges when working to support the health and well-being of communities from countries where hepatitis B is more common, particularly in promoting access to testing, vaccination, and care, free of stigma. Partnering with programs such as the Australian Migrant English Program to deliver education sessions offers a meaningful and inclusive way to engage with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, building trust, increasing health literacy, and supporting informed health choices.

LiverWELL delivers free viral hepatitis and liver disease education sessions, resources and materials to all AMEP providers.
