Volunteer story by Caroline

March 13, 2024

Please share a brief overview on yourself.

My name is Caroline, and I’m currently a first-year student at Deakin University, pursuing a Master of Health Promotion. I am passionate about health promotion because it integrates health and the humanities, and I hope to make meaningful changes in my communities. Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, I also have a passion for my cat, Beanie.

What inspired you to become a LiverWELL volunteer?

I was looking into ways I could witness how health promotion is implemented in communities and how I could contribute with some guidance.

Do you have a particular interest in liver health?

Liver disease is very prevalent in Taiwan, my homeland, so I am well acquainted with and interested in improving liver health in general.

Please describe one of your favourite LiverWELL experiences or moments.

It was volunteering to help with the LiverWELL stand at the Victoria Street Lunar Festival, on the hottest day of the year! It was really inspiring seeing everyone come together to promote LiverWELL and the work they do, which is to encourage liver health and engage people to learn more about their bodies. Maddie did a great job with the resources, the stand and organising everything despite the sweltering heat. I also enjoyed speaking with Alain, who is supervising me in another portfolio project, and learning about his experiences and insights in health promotion.

What tips do you have for new volunteers?

To be engaged with the opportunities and the communities we serve, as well as the staff at LiverWELL – they are all very friendly!

What’s next for you?

I am excited to learn more in my studies and to continue exploring my passion in health promotion!

LiverWELL observes and honours the Kulin Nation's intrinsic connection to land, sky and water, and the creator Bunjil. LiverWELL is committed to being led and informed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders on bridging health outcomes for communities and improving liver health.
