Volunteer story by Rabi

December 12, 2024

Please share a brief overview on yourself.

I am an Indonesian veterinarian pursuing a Master of Public Health at Monash University. My passion lies in improving community health and understanding global public health challenges is crucial for creating meaningful change.

What inspired you to become a LiverWELL volunteer?

I was inspired to become a LiverWELL volunteer because I wanted to immerse myself in public health issues in Australia. Liver health caught my attention because of its significance worldwide and its prevalence in my home country, Indonesia, where about 7% of the population is affected by hepatitis. This connection motivated me to contribute to raising awareness and prevention strategies.

Do you have a particular interest in liver health?

As someone with a background in veterinary science transitioning into public health, I find liver health fascinating due to its critical role in overall well-being. Learning about hepatitis in both humans and animals has broadened my perspective on interconnected health systems.

Please describe one of your favourite LiverWELL experiences or moments.

One of my favourite experiences was engaging with Dandenong High School students to share knowledge about liver health. Witnessing their curiosity and enthusiasm to learn made me realise the power of education in shaping healthier communities.

What tips do you have for new volunteers?

Say “yes” to every opportunity, even if it feels daunting at first. Embrace new experiences and take the initiative to knock on doors—it’s often where the most rewarding moments happen

What’s next for you?

I want to apply the LiverWELL experiences to educate more people on liver health and other crucial public health issues, contributing to healthier communities and greater awareness globally.
