Volunteer story by Shayla

February 4, 2026

Hi! I’m Shaylah, I am a 22-year-old health promotion graduate who has recently completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences, majoring in Health Promotion and Psychological Science.

What inspired you to become a LiverWELL volunteer?

I was inspired to volunteer with LiverWELL after finishing my degree and wanting hands-on experience in the health sector. I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, community-based work where I could see a tangible impact from my efforts.

Do you have a particular interest in liver health?

While I didn’t initially have a specific interest in liver health, my time with LiverWELL has significantly expanded my understanding. Learning more about hepatitis and the importance of liver health has been eye-opening and has strengthened my interest in health education and prevention.

Please describe one of your favorite LiverWELL experiences or moments.

One of my favourite volunteering experiences has been assisting with the Adult Migrant English Program. Engaging with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and answering their questions was incredibly rewarding. It was especially meaningful to see the relief on students’ faces when myths about Hepatitis were clarified. I loved hearing student’s unique stories and building connections that helped them feel more confident about their health, and empowered to share this knowledge with their families.

What tips do you have for new volunteers?

My advice to new volunteers is to say yes to opportunities where you can and give things a go.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working in casual roles across health education and administration, and I hope to move into a full-time health promotion role in the future, continuing the same passion and excitement I feel while volunteering with LiverWELL.
