Volunteer story by Shrizu

January 30, 2025

Please share a brief overview about yourself.

Hello, I am Shrizu. Originally I am a registered nurse from Nepal. I completed my Master of Public Health at Australian Catholic University. Currently, I am a patient care assistant at Mercy Health East Melbourne.

What inspired you to become a LiverWELL volunteer?

As I was in a health care profession back in Nepal, and also was studying a Master of Public Health, I was always interested in doing something within the health promotion and prevention sector in Australia. However, being a full-time student while working a part-time job, life has been a bit busy. But in 2024 I started my volunteering journey with Diabetes Victoria, and from there I got to know about LiverWELL!

Do you have a particular interest in liver health?

As a nurse and graduate in public health, I have developed a strong interest in liver health and its critical role in the overall well-being of an individual. I believe that promoting liver health is essential, particularly in low-resource settings where access and awareness of healthcare can be limited.

Please describe one of your favourite LiverWELL experiences or moments.

I am truly enjoying my time volunteering with LiverWELL; I not only contribute to a meaningful cause but also gain valuable skills along the way. All the skills I have acquired while creating resource packs for hepatitis B have enhanced my ability to create professional education material in the future. I love how welcoming the team at LIiverWELL is to their volunteers. We often share Meals together, exchanging stories and experiences that deepen our connection. The mentorship and advice from Alain and Neoma not only enriched my volunteering experience but also equipped me with skills that will undoubtedly benefit my future career. Overall my time in LiverWELL so far has been fulfilling and transforming!

What tips do you have for new volunteers?

My tips to new volunteers would be to embrace this opportunity to learn new skills and gain knowledge and to stay engaged, this experience will help all of us build valuable connections.

What’s next for you

I am considering pursuing additional training or courses related to health education, community service or public health to enhance my skills.  In the meantime, I will be engaging with LiverWELL for more volunteering activities.
