Volunteer story by Suyi

April 29, 2025

Please share a brief overview of yourself.

My name is Suyi, an international student from Cambodia, currently pursuing a double degree in Mechatronics Engineering and Marketing at Swinburne University. Although my field of study is not closely aligned with humanitarian work, I have always believed in using what I know, and learning what I don’t, to create a positive impact wherever I can.

What inspired you to become a LiverWELL volunteer?

My motivation to engage with LiverWELL was sparked by a conversation I had with a team member of the organisation during an event hosted at my university. Hearing about her work truly inspired me—especially how she supports people facing language barriers in accessing vital information about liver health. As an international student, I understand how challenging it can be to navigate important health information in a language that’s not your first. Her dedication resonated with me deeply, and it motivated me to participate in this work and contribute to making health information more accessible for everyone, regardless of their background or language.

Do you have a particular interest in liver health?

Before I started volunteering at LiverWELL, I had very limited knowledge about liver health. Now that I understand its importance, I am eager to learn more about liver diseases, prevention methods, and how to raise awareness to improve community health.

Please describe one of your favourite LiverWELL experiences or moments.

One of my favourite experiences at LiverWELL was when I took part in a data entry session. Although the task was straightforward, it felt meaningful knowing that the information I was recording would be used for a greater cause. It gave me a sense of purpose, understanding how even small tasks contribute to the organisation’s larger goals. During this session, I also had the opportunity to meet a fellow volunteer who was around the same age as me, and It was great to connect with someone who shares similar interests and a passion for making a difference.

What tips do you have for new volunteers?

There are no tasks too insignificant or too repetitive when you’re helping out. Even if something feels like a small job, you never know what you might learn or experience in the process. Whenever an opportunity arises it’s always worth getting involved because you can learn something new and grow from every experience.

What’s next for you?
Next, I plan to be more active at LiverWELL. I’m looking forward to taking part in events and engaging more directly with the community.
