Learning about hepatitis B while improving English skills

December 12, 2024

LiverWELL collaborated with Cheltenham Community Centre AMEP classes to deliver a workshop that raised awareness of hepatitis B and positive liver health. Around 45 participants from all different backgrounds attended the session, and the session was effective in helping to improve students’ health literacy and English proficiency.

Activities such as flashcards, picture cards, and conversation prompts from the Living Well with Hepatitis B Activity Pack helped students practice conversation. Health Promotion Officers Alain Palines and Maddie Bolton, along with volunteers Sunidhi and Rabiyatul, guided students through these activities. Additional resources in multiple languages, including Simplified Chinese and Vietnamese, were provided to support participants in discussing hepatitis B with their GP.

There are many challenges that organisations face in responding to the needs of these populations, especially when it comes to getting tested, vaccinated, and treated. Holding education sessions with the Australian Migrant English Program is an effective approach to connecting with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, or priority populations.

LiverWELL delivers free viral hepatitis and liver disease education sessions, resources and materials to all AMEP providers. If you would like to book a session with one of our Multicultural Educators, please contact us.
