Raising Awareness of Hepatitis B in Chinese Communities

August 15, 2024

LiverWELL is proud to announce the release of a new video aimed at raising awareness about hepatitis B and liver disease within the Chinese community. Produced in collaboration with a dedicated group of community health workers and doctors, this video aims to clear up common misconceptions and address the stigma and challenges faced by those affected.

Our ambassadors for this project include Dr. Jason Chuen and Dr. Christopher Leung (Austin Health), Mary Ma (Moonee Valley City Council), Joy Cao (cohealth), Wei Liao (Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services) and Yuqian He (Multicultural Health & Support Service). Each ambassador shares a deep passion for improving liver health outcomes within their communities. As Dr. Christopher Leung, a liver specialist, emphasises, “It is gut-wrenching when we discover large liver cancers in young patients who have lived with undiagnosed hepatitis B.”

Through this video, the ambassadors deliver critical messages about the importance of vaccination, testing, treatment, and management of hepatitis in a culturally sensitive manner.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to these community ambassadors for their unwavering commitment to this project.

Voices from the Community

We asked each ambassador to share why they are passionate about the elimination of hepatitis B. Their powerful words highlight the urgency and importance of our mission:

Wei Liao: “The reason I am passionate about eliminating hepatitis B is because I lost my best friend to liver cancer.”

Joy Cao: “We can spread this information without language barriers and improve the health literacy of residents.”

Dr. Christopher Leung: “Unfortunately, people with hepatitis B often only show symptoms when it’s too late. In fact, liver cancer or liver failure from hepatitis B is one of the major reasons we do liver transplants at my hospital. And 84% of our liver transplants are from reversible or preventable causes.”

Yuqian He: “Growing up, I saw the impact of this disease and the stigma it caused. This inspired me to educate others and promote compassion. By raising awareness and advocating for better healthcare, we can break the stigma and ensure those affected get the care they deserve.”

We encourage you to share this video within your networks to help spread these important messages.

We would like to thank everyone involved in this project for their dedication to raising awareness and supporting the elimination of hepatitis B.
